Remote Learning

Updated 11/11/20

Who is eligible for remote learning? Remote learning will be allowed for students who, due to COVID related restrictions are required to stay home from school for a period of time. It is not provided so that students can simply take a day off from being in school. Examples of a student who would learn remotely are someone who was exposed to COVID and requires quarantine despite not having any symptoms, someone that has symptoms such as a runny nose and therefore needs to stay home, etc. Things like taking a trip or having a mental health day do not qualify a student for remote learning.

How do I arrange for remote learning? All remote learning will be arranged through Jill Kaminetzky. Parents should not contact teachers directly to arrange remote learning. Teachers are instructed not to admit a student to their Zoom class unless they have received the official approval from Mrs. Kaminetzky. For 3rd grade and younger, in order to access materials for a class, we will require a 24 hour period of time so the teacher may properly prepare for their remote student. In general, parents should assume that if it is determined that their child(ren) must switch to remote learning that they will begin their remote learning 24 hours later.

How does a remote learner connect to their classroom? Every teacher has placed their Remote Access Zoom link to their Google Classroom. Should someone require remote access they should be able to connect this way.

What if there are technical difficulties while a student is remote learning? Please call Jill Kaminetzky (or for non-immediate help email directly Rabbi Gershon Eisenberger, Director of Technology) who will arrange for one of our technology staff to troubleshoot the issue. Please do not try contacting your child’s teachers directly as they are in the middle of teaching.

How do we ensure success for both students and teachers on remote learning?

  • 4th-8th grade students may join via Zoom as soon as they are absent. 3rd grade and below should only go onto Zoom after having given us 24 hrs. notice (to Jill Kaminetzky) that the student is out.

  • Materials (other than those already posted to Google Classroom) will be ready for pickup from the front office after 24 hrs. or uploaded to Google Classroom for all students. After the initial material pick up for the first day of absence, all future materials will be available for pick up from the front office weekly, on fridays.

  • Students should follow their regular daily schedule.

  • For short term Zoom students, tests will be made up upon return to school.

  • During breaks/recess Zoom will be closed.

What is the remote learning etiquette?

  • When logging into Zoom, students must use their @student.hilleldayschool.org accounts.

  • Students that are learning remotely must wear their school uniform.

  • Students should be in a quiet place in their house, remain on mute unless answering or asking a question, and wear headphones so that they can better focus.

  • Students are expected to join on time, participate in their classes and remain visible to the teacher with their video on.

  • Breaks may be taken for restroom use or to get a drink as in school. Otherwise, the student is expected to be a part of the class.

  • Recess, lunch and other breaks follow the class schedule.

What do we ask of parents of remote learners?

  • Please do not text your child’s teacher during class. If you are having technical issues, please be directly in touch with Jill Kaminetzky.

  • Parents are not allowed to join the Zoom for any reason, just like you would not walk into your child’s physical classroom without first arranging the visit with administration. If the student is having a technical difficulty, parents are encouraged to reach out as indicated above.

  • Allow your child to speak for themselves just as if they were in class. We want to build resilience in our students and encourage them to speak up for themselves.

Thank you for partnering with us to make your child’s remote learning as positive and effective as possible.
