After Cliff Hopp played football at the University of Georgia and the University of Nebraska, he coached track and field, football, golf and basketball at Columbus High. He won numerous conference and district championships. His 1963 team went 18-3 and made it to the semifinal round at the state tournament. Toward the end of his career, Hopp served as the Assistant Principal and Athletic Director at CHS. He increased the number of sports offered at Columbus High from 8 to 17. He also was instrumental in helping the State of Nebraska and Columbus High add girls sports in the 1970s.
