Dennis Albers, Class of 1960, was selected for the HHS Athletic Hall of Fame in the inaugural class of 2015.
Albers is one of the greatest gymnasts in Nebraska history. Albers dominated Nebraska high school gymnastics in 1959 and 1960, leading the Tigers to back-to-back state championships.
The all-around state champion in both years, he won gold medals in tumbling, trampoline, parallel bars, horizontal bars and free exercise. Albers won thirteen of a possible sixteen state medals in a pair of performances that rank among the best the state has ever seen.
He also lettered for three years in track, helping the Tigers win the 1960 Mid East championship with an individual title in the high jump. He set the HHS record in the high jump that year and finished third in the state.
As a junior he was one of the top pole vaulters in the state, winning a Mid East title and qualifying for state, before an injury ended his vaulting. He was also a conference medalist in the high hurdles.
As a collegian, Albers led Nebraska to the 1964 Big Eight Championship, winning the all-around championship and four individual events.
