Cal Johnson, Class of 1954, was selected for the HHS Athletic Hall of Fame in the second class in 2016.
Johnson was a star on state championship teams in both basketball and baseball. In basketball, he scored 520 points during his senior season including 32 in the state final game as the Tigers downed Omaha Benson. He averaged 24.8 points per game for the 18-3 champions. The 37 points he rang up against Grand Island set the single game scoring record which stood until 1994.
He was the American Legion baseball team’s number-one pitcher as they won the 1953 state Class A championship and came within one win of the Regional championship.
He also golfed at HHS in the early days of that sport at the school.
