On Thanksgiving Day 1940 in North Platte, the Tiger footballers completed an undefeated fall and clinched the mythical Nebraska state football championship as handed out by all the major newspapers and press associations.
In third week they held Grand Island, an early favorite of the papers for the crown, to -15 total yards in a 6-2 upset in GI.
It took a fourth quarter comeback led by Hopp to clinch the final win over North Platte.
Wally Hopp named player of the year by both the Lincoln and Omaha papers.
Both the Lincoln and Omaha papers shared the TIger crown with Creighton Prep and Omaha Tech, which tied each other and lost to out of state opponents.
