In 1931 the state track championships were run inside of the University of Nebraska's eight-year-old Memorial Stadium. It was the largest state meet in Nebraska history at that point with 121 schools and over 1000 athletes competing.
Hastings entered the championships as the two-time Mid State Conference champions. The Tigers hopes were led by returning Class A hurdle champion Gil Young. Young had swept both hurdles races at the league meet.
The Tigers were expected to be challenged by defending champ Scottsbluff, league rival Beatrice and Omaha champ Tech High. None were able to keep up with the Tigers, and Young led the charge. Young swept gold medals in both hurdles races and the open 220-yard dash. Then he teamed with Otto Hejkal, Harry Corbin, and Danial Breault for a fourth gold in the 880-yard relay.
The Tigers picked up two more Class A titles in the discus (Maurice Asmus) and 880-yard run (Myron Youngblood). Breault gave the Tigers more points, finishing third in the 100 and 200-yard dashes and the long jump. Corbin grabbed third places in both the shot and the disc.
Hastings was coached by long-time Tiger coach Dwight Thomas. Thomas coached several state runner-up basketball teams, but this was was his only state championship. Thomas took nine members of this outstanding squad to the prestigious Drake Relays.
