This paper explores the idea of using the facial action units of stress to assess the facial actions of lack of reading comprehension. By using facial recognition software, students were examined while watching a stressful video to achieve a baseline reading of stress. Then, the students were monitored while reading passages of varying difficulty, including low (Relaxed State), normal (Control State) and difficult (Experimental State). In the end, AU01 (Inner Brow Raise), AU06 (Cheek Raiser) and AU09 (Nose Wrinkler) show potential for being indicators of lack of reading comprehension, although further research will be required to prove this. It was found that a main issue of this paper was lack of interest in participation, leading many subjects to provide skewed results that would either have to be rejected or used as a control. There was a mild correlation between stress caused by video to stress caused by a difficult reading passage. This could potentially be used to automatically detect reading comprehension in students, if paired with the correct software.
