What is student-centered learning?

According to Michael Horn and Heather Staker in their book, Blended, student-centered learning is a combination of personalized learning (learning customized to help each student succeed) and competency-based learning (learning that requires student to demonstrate mastery of a given subject).

How does our philosophy of student-centered learning support that vision?
