Students declare the architecture major when applying to the university.
General Program Information:
First Year:
It is a challenging year as they are working on weeding out students, typically each first year class is cut in half by the end of the first year, so perseverance is key!
The first year is focused heavily on design and creative work (lots of crazy designs and patterns). Many of the first year projects can be considered more art than architecture. This gets you in the mindset of design and form before technical work. There is also a strong focus with hand drawings and learning how to draft (similar to Introduction to Drafting). Focus is placed on using your senses to create your drawings (sight, sound, touch, etc.). Second semester focuses on selecting your own building and dissecting it.

Second Year:
This year opens you up to architectural designs. You will use your artistic design knowledge from first year to create actual homes and buildings. This is where you get more into the program's focus on plans, sections, elevations, and isometrics
Reviews and Portfolios:
Students complete "studio reviews" where other professors or students who have graduated will come back and review midterm and final projects. It is a business casual event where students dress nice and present sketches, drawings, and models to observers and then they ask students questions.
At the end of the second year students will submit a portfolio for review to advance to the professional program
Additional Classes in Addition to Studio for Year 1 and 2:
Design Communications 1 & 2: Learn Revit, Rhinoceros, AutoCAD, Photoshop, and Illustrator.
Cultures 1,2,3,4: Architecture history. From prehistory - modern times.
E-Tech 1,2,3: Learn about building materials and environmental technology with construction.
Structures 1,2,3: Physics-based structural diagrams class. Learn to make your architecture actually “work”.
Organizations to Join:
Students have the option of joining/pledging one of three co-ed professional fraternity for architecture.
AIAS, NOMAS, and a professional fraternity are viewed by some students as vital to being successful in the architecture program. They help ensure connections are being made professionally, and help jump start your social network.
School Culture:
The program feels like a little bubble where we all can share ideas or struggles because we are all experiencing it together.
Older students in the program are always willing to help out the underclassmen and will often walk around our studios to give us pointers or have us explain and tweak our ideas.
Specific Quotes from Current/Past KSU Students:
"Most days I look forward to going to class because we are always doing hands on drawings or models and sometimes we go on trips around campus to get inspiration or do our work outside." - Riley Ransom
"My experience since starting has been great. I love the community I found in the architecture department. It's very common for people to make friends with other architecture students exclusively because of the studio culture. Studio culture is very similar if not basically the same thing as Architecture II's late night push to finish the AIA HSDC project, but almost every night of the week. Studio becomes a second home, and I can say that I was in the studio for more hours than my own dorm. Upper years have proven time and time again that they are more than willing to help younger students when asked, whether that be anything from basic Photoshop skills or how to use the plotter. I cannot stress enough how strong of a community the department has created. " - Trey Cruz
Suggestions for Preparing for Architecture at Kennesaw State:
After being accepted into the program, you have the option to enroll in a 2 week summer workshop prior to your freshman year. The workshop gives you quick studio projects that open up your design-side brain and allows you to meet some of the professors before school begins. This is a great opportunity to develop and build relationships with future professors and classmates.

Architecture Program Admission:
No portfolio is required; however it is recommended. Professors suggest sketches and planning documents be included over floor plans and other computer generated documents. Students typically include the following in their portfolio: sketches, design planning, and final project renderings. Portfolios are limited to 10 items with descriptions for each item.
Portfolio Advice: The Dean of the Undergraduate program reviews all applicants' portfolios and is one of the people choosing who to admit to GT. She stresses that she doesn’t like seeing Revit heavy portfolios. It is preferred to include anything that demonstrates creativity (does not have to be architecture related at all). If students do to include stuff from Revit, they should submit renderings and try to stay away from floor plans. Physical Models are a great addition to the portfolio as well.

General Program Information:
First Semester
Studio classes are three times a week including two 4-hour sessions and one 3-hour session. Students also have core classes in addition to the main studio course.
First semester is mainly model based/drafting and there are a lot of abstract projects geared towards teaching you to think outside of the box and problem solving.
Second Semester
Studio is three times a week including two 5-hour sessions and one 3-hour session. Students also have core classes in addition to the main studio course.
Second Semester is computer program heavy. A majority of student work is completed through models, adobe software, and Rhino 6.
Half of the semester is dedicated to a project that follows the architectural design process.
You are given a real-life site in Atlanta and visit the site to survey it. Then you spend the remainder of the semester designing the project/building.
Suggestions for Preparing for Architecture at Georgia Tech:
Pre-College Architecture program at Tech during the summer before your senior year of high school is highly recommended for introducing students to campus, the architecture program at Tech, meeting potential classmates, and creating contacts and connections for the future.
