Why do I coach? I coach to help support teachers in their journey to become better at their craft. I have a passion for preparing our students to have successful lives and good knowledge of 21st Century pedagogy is key to giving them the skills they need. Listen to a few of Wilder MS teachers with whom I had a chance to collaborate with to develop a Henrico 21 Lesson.
Empowering Every Learner
For three years the WMS Unconference has been an integral part of our yearly professional development. My goal is for teachers to exercise their voice and choice around what they want to learn. Each year has centered around an activity, last school year, teachers participated in a frame story. They completed the sentence "A great teacher...". Their sentence endings became an inspirational story of what great teachers do.
This school year, the focus was on innovation. What can we do differently to reach our kids! Teachers had a chance to participate in a VR content related activity and brainstorm ideas on how VR could extend the learning for their students.

Inspire Us! But Do it Quickly! Teacher Driven Ignite Sessions
We saw huge successes in empowering teachers to share quickly how they were innovating in their instruction. As part of our half day PD day in March, teachers rotated through several sessions including an ignite session. 5 of our Wilder Teachers volunteered to share a tool they were using in their classroom in a quick 5 minute presentation. Then they stayed on to support teachers to build based on the tool they were interested in. I had several teachers in the weeks that followed say to me, "I saw this at the ignite session and look I am using it myself!". It was a great way to introduce new ways of teaching in a peer to peer setting. Take a moment to see what a few of our teachers shared.
School wide sessions that I have created and presented during staff events such as department meetings, faculty meetings and professional development days.
"Mr. Jefferson, I attended the History Department Meeting this afternoon and Ms. Toy conducted an effective training session named “Spiraling Through Bloom’s.” This workshop was a meaningful higher order thinking strategy in which teachers could easily incorporate within their lessons affording our students increased and more rigorous instructional opportunities. Each content area could greatly benefit from this support. I recommend that the Math Department schedule her in the near future. This effort is in alignment with the Pearson workshop conducted last week centering on student engagement, work time practices and cooperative learning activities."
