Building Assets, Reducing Risks
9th Graders
THS BARR Brochure
What is the "Building Assets, Reducing Risks" (BARR) Program?
The BARR program is a support program for all freshmen that enter high school. Each student is assigned to a team of three teachers (English, math and science) that will work at providing supports to them to help them succeed in their freshmen year. These three teachers will work together along with the BARR Coordinator, BARR Counselor, and BARR Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) to help come up with plans to help ensure students are thriving in school.
What is BARR?
An educational model to help students manage the transition to high school.
It is unique in its approach to addressing the needs of students using two interrelated approaches:
Creating positive, intentional relationships staff to staff, staff to students, students to students
Using real-time student-level performance data to guide instructional action
Each student will have a teacher advisor that checks their grades, attendance, and overall well-being on a weekly basis. Teachers meet with the BARR Coordinator, BARR Counselor and BARR MFT and the team works together to help all students succeed in their freshmen year.
Why BARR?
20–40% of 9th-grade students fail one or more classes needed for graduation because of factors unrelated to learning ability.
Low graduation rates are driven by students who enter high school poorly prepared for success and who have trouble transitioning to 9th grade.
