Unit 1: Statistics

(getting to know one another)

In Algebra 2, students analyze and apply operations using multiple representations of functions to compare, interpret data, and make inferences.  Functions include (but not limited to) linear, exponential, quadratic, absolute value, inverse,  piecewise, cubic, polynomial, trigonometric, logarithms, etc.  They use statistics in real world contexts to develop solutions.

The Story of Algebra 2 - Unit 1: Statistics (Up to 19 days)

The big ideas of this unit are normal distribution & population percentages along with making inferences & justifying conclusions.  Understanding & evaluating random processes are embedded within this big idea.  All the standards in this unit are modeling standards and much of the assessment will focus on Claims 4 so work should not be done in isolation.  Students should have ample opportunities to explore statistical experiments and informally arrive at statistical techniques.  By involving students in the choice of statistical questions centered around their interests, this unit provides an excellent way for the students, and the teacher, to get to know one another.

Unit 1 Notes

By involving students in the choice of statistical questions centered around their interests, this unit provides an excellent way for the students and the teacher to get to know one another.  Including the teacher in some data sets may introduce the idea of an outlier.  It is also a chance to gauge & intervene with students' number operations skills.   Calculator use helps students focus on the statistics rather than the calculations; although, some simple calculations can be a chance to formatively assess and reengage with number operations learned in elementary school.  DESMOS calculators are provided for these types of problems on SBAC.  Placing this unit first also allows for statistical application problems throughout the year wherever they may be appropriate.
