Merge Cube: Plant & Animal Cells
This is by far one of my favorite units of the year!
For three weeks, students will learn about the levels of organization, 11 different organelles, the different types of cells and their function.
For their end of the unit test, students will build a candy plant cell. I send out a letter prior to this lab so families will have all the details in regards to what materials to bring, when to bring them, etc.
Below are student examples from years past.
To understand the organization of living and non-living things, students must understand the levels of organization.
Similar to levels of classification, levels of organization help students understand the different building blocks that make up a living thing.
This lesson includes a series of games such as cup stacking and Headbandz!
Students build 11 different organelles out of construction paper. For each organelle, students will color the organelle, write down the organelle's function and write down the analogy for that organelle.
After students have taken notes, students will draw, cut, paste and label the organelle. Here's the catch! Students have the entire length of the Cell Rap Song to draw, cut, glue and label the organelle before moving on to the next.
Cells, cells, they're made or organelles!
The Merge Cube is a hologram foam cube that produces images on a 3D scale.
Through the use of their iPads, students can view the human body, the solar system, and in this case the parts of different types of cells.
These cubes were purchased through the KPAX grant "One Class at a Time," I wrote at the beginning of the 2019 school year. Thank you KPAX for recognizing the importance of hands on learning in the classroom!
