Scheduling can be one of the hardest parts of school. Scheduling out the whole semester can feel overwhelming but leaving it to the last day can negatively effect your academics.
Our best suggestion is to mix semester scheduling with weekly scheduling. You can do this by adding your exams, papers, and projects throughout the semester as the first step to your schedule. Then each week make a weekly/bi-weekly assignment list. This will allow you to practice looking over assigned work each week and will relieve some of the stress that can come with looking over your whole semester at one time.
There are so many different schedules to pick from including google calendar, paper planners, to-do lists, and online scheduler options. Below we will cover some of these options and how to set them up.
Finding the right schedule for you can take a lot of stress off of you as a student so please let us help you find the right option and help you get all set-up.
Some good online options are:
Google Calendar: This can be part of your Heidelberg gmail account and can help to keep all of your educational information in one place.
Here is an example of how you can set that up:
This is a free online format very similar to calendar option, but it provides space for you to fill in progress reports on assignments and will update you when course work is overdue. The other nice thing is you can add all of your classes, when and where you will meet, and set tasks to align with the class it is due in. If you get the app on your phone it will remind you about each class either sixty-, thirty-, or fifteen minutes before class begins. This is a great feature for people who lose track of time.
Notion is a great student dashboard. It allows you to tailor it to your needs whether that's a to do list, assignment tracker, textbook notes page, or internship productivity tracker is up to you. You can design your own pages to make it as individualized as you would like; although, if you want to cut down on time or are less technologically inclined you can access templates on the link below and edit from there.
If you are looking for something less structure this is a good option:
This website allows you to make a free online to-do list. You can sync this list to your other devices which will help you to stay connected to what you need to accomplish.
I suggest updating by the week but checking it close to everyday. Again, this will help to make good habits preparing for class.
A to-do is great way to prioritize work as well. If you struggle on what to start with a to-do list might be for you. Check out the time management/procrastination page to get more tips on how to prioritize your list!
If you have a physical planner you probably have a plan how you would like to set-it up so this section is less about set-up and more about tips and tricks.
Having a planner can be great but sometimes things can feel out of sight out of mind if we aren't careful. You want to be checking your planner about everyday, and make sure that you have it at each class just in case a new assignment is announced or an exam is moved.
If that feels unrealistic here is another tactic to keep you reminded about assignments without throwing out your planner
-Make reminders/tasks in your phone or google calendar. Look in you planner at the beginning of the week and make task of what you need done as simple reminders on you phone. That way you get a heads-up even if you don't check your planner.
The Sticky Note Method is quite simple and is great for people who like less structure or for people who simply feel they need a constant reminder of their to-do list.
All you need to do is at the beginning of you week go through your course syllabi pick out everything you have do and add a due date next to it. Then create a sticky note with the days as headings and add assignments below the day that you plan to do the assignment not when the assignment is due. Once the sticky note is complete put it on the inside of your computer so that every time you open your computer you are reminded of what you have due. This method is great especially if you are struggling to keep your planner up-to-date.
