“I became a leader of the Secondary Eco Committee this year. It was as hard as it was exciting to build up and teach my dedicated team of prefects and ordinary members. The biggest step this year for the eco-community at HeadStart continues to be the Mangroves Campaign. This step was thanks to the relationship we developed with the leader of the Mangrove Teens movement, who provided the soil and seeds; thanks to passionate HeadStart volunteers who planted 500 Mangroves; thanks to generous people who sponsored mangroves at the Christmas market; and thanks to the school for planning to build the Mangrove nursery. When the seeds from the nursery grow to trees this will epitomise our collective efforts, showing the fruits of this huge, kind, green collaboration!”

“Being a Secondary Eco Ambassador for the past three years has been an incredibly rewarding experience, and I’ve loved every minute of it. I’ve had the opportunity to take part in a range of initiatives, including plastic drives, mangrove projects, eco-bricks, beach clean-ups, and paper collection. It’s been amazing to see how much progress we’ve made and the strong momentum we’ve built since we first started. Working alongside others who care about the environment has made it even more special. This role has not only been enjoyable but has also deepened my appreciation for sustainability and making a positive impact.”

“This year, becoming the eco ambassador has been one of my favorite parts of school. I especially enjoyed spending time in the garden, exploring different plants, observing wildlife and looking after the wormery. I’ve also loved working with the primary school students, as it’s something completely new for me and has been a refreshing change, allowing me to share ideas and learn from their enthusiasm. This experience has definitely reminded me of the importance of stepping outside the classroom, getting hands-on and reconnecting with nature, where some of the most meaningful learning can happen.”

“Sustainability is more than just a word. It is a belief, a mindset and an action. When we at HeadStart talk of sustainable practices we see these operating at different levels of scale. As individuals we must first be able to care for ourselves, secondarily care for those within our community and finally care for the non-human world that we are part of. Our activities across this academic year have sought to enable community wide practices at each of these scales. We have enhanced and systematised our practices to ensure that our activities are in themselves sustainable. We, and I, are proud to launch our HeadStart Eco School web resource this July and even prouder of the work undertaken by the community as a whole to get up and running the Mangrove Rejuvenation Project. As we move into the next academic year, and I pass on the mantle of Coordinator, we have bigger plans to get more of the community engaged in the triumvirate of sustainability. As ever we thank you all for your support and we look forward to the amazing things we can do together”
