The school organises and facilitates monthly community beach clean events, drawing upon our diverse student and parent population to give back to one of the island’s greatest resources: our beaches. A systematic approach to our beach cleans, led by our Upper School Eco Committee, uses two methods: Beachcombing and Beach Panning. With Beachcombing, we collect and sort beach rubbish into three types to enable reuse (interesting found objects), recycling (plastic straws and bottle tops) and appropriate disposal (all other rubbish). With Beach Panning, we select a small section of the beach and focus on removing as much microplastic as we can find as we sift through the sands.
"Beach cleanups in Phuket are essential for protecting marine life, preserving natural beauty, and supporting the local tourism."
The island produces over 1,000 tonnes of waste every day, with increasing amounts ending up in the ocean due to limited landfill space. Marine animals are especially at risk. Between 2021 and 2023, the number of endangered species affected by plastic pollution in the Andaman Sea rose from 20% to 30%. Over the last 3 years we have collected over 900KG of trash across Phuket beaches.
Cleanups help remove harmful materials like plastic, fishing ropes, and debris from the beaches and coastal waters, preventing long-term damage to ecosystems. Our cleanups not only protect wildlife and reduce pollution, but also help keep the beaches safe and beautiful for you - residents and tourists alike. By joining our local efforts and involving the community, we can take meaningful steps toward a cleaner, healthier environment.
When you show up, gloves on and ready to help, you’re not just cleaning the beach you’re making a statement. You’re saying our island, our wildlife, and our ocean matter. One person can make a difference. A group can make a change. So grab a friend, show up, and take action. Phuket needs you!
