HOMEWORK POLICY
DEFINITION:
Homework encompasses tasks that:
students complete outside of school time
students can comfortably complete on their own
do not require the purchase of any additional materials
take no more than 15 - 30 minutes each.
PURPOSE:
The purpose of homework in the IB PYP is to encourage students to:
foster independence
review, reflect upon, and extend their learning in terms of knowledge, skills, and concepts.
build a healthy study routine
nurture a daily reading habit
PHILOSOPHY:
Our most successful students begin to pursue a sport, an instrument, a hobby, a passion, or some combination of the above in PYP. This investment of time in worthwhile pursuits builds powerful, well-rounded individuals in later years.
Whether it is origami, baking, playing street cricket, talking to grandparents in Pashto, memorising the Quran, or mastering a Rubik’s cube - to name some popular options - students in the PYP should be engaged in meaningful activities each afternoon.
Time spent on mindless repetition, rote learning, or busywork is stolen time and do not improve outcomes.
Exercise, laughter, a good diet, and 12 hours of sleep are essential for learning and cognitive development.
PARENTAL SUPPORT
Parents are encouraged to:
supervise HW to support children to work with concentration. Extending your attention span is like learning to ride a bike - parents can be the training wheels.
offer helpful strategies or reminders to help children workout problems on their own.
help identify whether the work assigned is too easy or too challenging for their child.
never solve or complete the HW for their child. If the child is stuck, show them how to reach out to the teacher and ask for help.
enforce 15-30 minutes of mandatory reading EVERY EVENING before bedtime.
MONDAY - WEDNESDAY : Reflect and Revise
