Food Preparation and Nutrition

Welcome to Food Preparation and Nutrition. Our course aims is to expand your food science knowledge through experimentation of wide range of practical and theory based tasks.

This page is full of visually informing resources that will allow you to develop and progress as designers to help support you in achieving your potential.

Opting for a GCSE in Food Preparation and Nutrition equips students with the knowledge, understanding and skills required to cook and apply the principles of food science, nutrition and healthy eating. It encourages students to cook, enables them to make informed decisions about food and nutrition and allows them to acquire knowledge in order to be able to feed themselves and others affordably and nutritiously, now and later in life.

Course overview and assessment criteria

By studying food preparation and nutrition learners will:

  • be able to demonstrate effective and safe cooking skills by planning, preparing and cooking a variety of food commodities whilst using different cooking techniques and equipment.

  • develop knowledge and understanding of the functional properties, chemical characteristics and nutritional content of food and drinks.

  • understand the relationship between diet, nutrition and health, including the physiological and psychological effects of poor diet and health.

  • understand the economic, environmental, ethical and socio-cultural influences on food availability, production processes, diet and health choices.

  • demonstrate knowledge and understanding of functional and nutritional properties, sensory qualities and microbiological food safety considerations when preparing, processing, storing, cooking and serving food.

  • understand and explore a range of ingredients and processes from different culinary traditions (traditional British and international) to inspire new ideas or modify existing recipes.

The content of course is divided into 6 areas:

1. Food commodities

2. Principles of nutrition

3. Diet and good health

4. The science of food

5. Where food comes from

6. Cooking and food preparation


Assessment/examinations

Component 1: Principles of Food Preparation and Nutrition Written examination: 1 hour 45 minutes 50% of qualification

This component will consist of two sections both containing compulsory questions and will assess the six areas of content as listed above.

Section A: questions based on stimulus material.

Section B: structured, short and extended response questions to assess content related to food preparation and nutrition.

Component 2: Food Preparation and Nutrition in Action Non-examination assessment: internally assessed, externally moderated

Assessment 1: 8 hours Assessment 2: 12 hours 50% of qualification

Assessment 1: The Food Investigation Assessment: A scientific food investigation which will assess the learner's knowledge, skills and understanding in relation to scientific principles underlying the preparation and cooking of food.

Assessment 2: The Food Preparation Assessment: Prepare, cook and present a menu which assesses the learner’s knowledge, skills and understanding in relation to the planning, preparation, cooking and presentation of food.

These assessments will be based on a choice of tasks released by Eduqas annually.

This linear qualification will be available in May/June each year. It will be awarded.

Changes to the course 2020:

Due to the current Covid 19 impact, GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition will now be marked as 50% Component 1: Written exam and 50% Component 2; Assessment 2: Practical exam and coursework. The course is normally marked at Written Exam 50% and Assessment 1, Food Investigation 15%- this has been removed; and Assessment 2, Practical Exam and Coursework 35%. Eduqas have confirmed these changes. Please see the Assessment Criteria section below to see how this course is marked.

Homework

Homework will be published on both Go4Schools and Google Classroom. Homework tasks may be computer based (e.g. completion of coursework) or practical work such as skills learnt in lessons and even some small food preparation tasks.

We are now also using Seneca Learning; which is a self-marked revision platform. Your teacher will set assigned tasks based on your current knowledge or learning.

Your teacher will provide you with all the relevant information, including sessions to allow you to complete practical work in the technology department. All homework that is set will go towards your coursework. Please ensure you stay on top of this and communicate with your teacher.

Feel free to print or use digitally to carry out your own independent revision.

Remember 10 minutes of revision regularly is often better than cramming an hour of revision right before the exam.
