This domain recognises student involvement in community service and learning experiences through service activities and Values-in-Action (VIA) projects. Every secondary school student is expected to contribute to the community for at least 6 hours per school year, i.e. at least 24 hours by the end of his/her secondary education.
- MOE Student Development Curriculum Division (15 February 2019)
The school's mission is to develop leaders to serve the nation. Hence, service to the community is a key educational process as part of a student's holistic development in Hwa Chong.
While most students may rely on their CCA or Consortium to help seek out CIP opportunities for them (such as consortium-based CIP with a long-term beneficiary), students are also strongly encouraged to get involved in Community Engagement Programme (CEP) or Service Learning (SL) projects (VIA projects) in their upper secondary years. These opportunities will greatly increase students' ownership in their community service where they will go through a more thoughtful and thorough process of planning and executing a meaningful engagement with a beneficiary of their choice.
The VIA project undertaken (CEP or SL) should be equivalent to 8 to 14 hours of CIP service. Students should be mindful when engaging beneficiaries for CEP/SL that there must be genuine and meaningful engagement where the needs of the beneficiary are placed above their own agenda.
Note:
Students should not be submitting exorbitantly high number of CIP hours as part of their CEP/SL projects.
To find out whether an activity can be considered for CEP, please write to Mrs Anuradna Boyanapalli (anuradha@hci.edu.sg), Senior Consultant / Student Development.
