This domain recognises the student’s leadership development in terms of participation in student leadership modules, formal leadership appointments, the National Youth Achievement Award (NYAA) and leadership positions in student-initiated/student-led projects.
- MOE Student Development Curriculum Division (15 February 2019)
In Hwa Chong, all students will have gone through level-based leadership modules during mass assembly sessions which include sharing by key personnel on topics such as self-leadership, servant leadership and entrepreneurial leadership. In addition, presentations from other modules such as Chinese Values and School History are also leadership-centric and provide all students with a good foundation on what leadership is about and the qualities of good leaders.
Students can look forward to many student leadership platforms to hone their leadership competencies throughout the four years in High School. These platforms include the Class Management Committee (CMC), Students' Council, CCAs, Green Council and the VIA Council. Students in the four Uniformed Groups also automatically attain Leadership Levels based on their rank achieved throughout the four years. Finally, students who led VIA projects in the area of CEP/Service Learning as part of the Organising Teams are also recognised for their leadership.
For all students and members of the Class Management Committees
For students in Students' Council, school-wide event committees and involved in CEP/SL projects
For students involved in CEP/SL projects, the Organising Team should be limited to a maximum of 6 persons comprising a Chairperson and/or a Vice-Chairperson with the rest of the team being committee members. Students who are recruited as participants during the actual execution of the CEP/SL project will only be accorded CIP hours.
For students in the Uniformed Groups
For students who may not have taken up opportunities in the various student leadership bodies, or are unable to attain their desired positions in the CCAs, they are also able to attain Leadership Levels via the National Youth Achievement Award (NYAA).
The National Youth Achievement Award (NYAA) is a youth development programme that encourages personal qualities of self-reliance, perseverance and responsibility. Students can engage in various types of projects ranging from skills development to community service in order to improve themselves and contribute to the larger community. Their efforts towards building their leadership capacities will be recognised under this category.
Finally, students may be part of smaller-scale student-initiated groups which serve the school through activities such as publications, environment awareness or other student-led initiatives. There may also be certain school-customised leadership positions and roles which are not mentioned in the above categories.
To recognise these students, Leadership Levels 2 to 4 can be accorded. The recognition must be pegged equivalently to those shown in the above categories, and one of the key factors in determining the Level is the extent of the impact on the school or community. In general, the level of impact (applicable for all leadership categories) can be considered based on the table below.
