Learning Clusters
Integrated Programme & Structured Integrated Programme
The Integrated Programme has been in full swing since 2004. All Sec. 1 to Sec. 4 are in the Integrated Programme (IP). Sec 3 students who need more guidance to learn are placed in the Structured Integrated Programme (SIP). SIP students who do well in the end-of-year examinations can return to Sec 4 IP while the remaining students will be promoted to the Sec 4 O Level class to prepare the GCE “O” Level Exams.
Special Programmes (Upper Sec)
All Sec. 2 students who have done well may opt to be placed in Sec 3 Special Programmes at the end of the year, based on their results. These programmes include :
Bicultural Studies Programme (BSP)
Science and Mathematics Talent Programme (SMTP) [Students can opt to undertake research in Math, Science or Defence Science.]
Humanities Programme (HP)
Classes offering the Special Programmes are hosted by the four consortia.
The objective of offering Special Programmes is to nurture independent learners to become thought leaders who are critical, creative & caring. Thus the Special Programme classrooms create structures and processes that would bring about both independent and collaborative learning opportunities.
One major platform for encouraging independent and collaborative learning is the research work platform. Research work is a compulsory component for students in the Special Programmes.
Beyond the classroom, Special Programme students get to have a taste of boarding life both local and overseas. The Integrated Boarding Programme (IBP) seeks to nurture the character and leadership growth of the students through communal living and close boarding master - boarder interaction and guidance in the HCI Boarding School. The China Immersion Programme held in various campuses in China, including Beijing and Xi An, allows the students to be immersed in learning and community involvement in the Chinese culture, giving them the opportunity to be adept in living in a foreign land.
In 2005, Hwa Chong pioneered the Bicultural Studies Programme (BSP). As the nation’s top independent school with a strong Chinese orientation, the aim was to nurture a select group of bi-cultural talents with cultural intelligence who can engage China as well as relate to the West. MOE has given the school approval to set up a satellite campus in Beijing. The aim is to facilitate a sustained and durable immersion of some of Singapore’s top students in Chinese culture. As the system of education replicates the HCI model, the satellite campus would provide study opportunities for our students between Singapore and Beijing. These students would be able to spend longer periods of cultural immersion in China without missing out on the Singapore curriculum.
Moreover, Beijing as China’s capital is an ideal location for our students to further deepen their socio-political knowledge of the country. By establishing close links with top Chinese schools, we can help both countries to foster closer bilateral ties by encouraging greater interaction between the student leaders of both countries. The 2nd High School affiliated to Beijing Normal University (Er Fu Zhong / EFZ) was chosen for its reputation as one of the first model schools of Beijing Education Commission.
On 7 March 2007, the then Education Minister and 2nd Minister for Finance, Tharman Shanmugaratnam announced the setting up of the Hwa Chong-Beijing Satellite Campus in Parliament.
The pioneer batch of 75 students left Singapore for Beijing’s Second High School attached to Beijing Normal University (Er Fu Zhong / EFZ) on 15 October 2007. They included students from the Bicultural Studies Programme, Humanities Programme as well as Science and Mathematics Research Programme.
The campus was officially launched by Mr Gan Kim Yong, Minister of State, Ministry of Education and Ministry of Manpower, on 9 November 2007.

Secondary One to Secondary Four Assessment Modes and Promotion Criteria
Please click link below for details on assessment modes and promotion criteria:
Examinations
There is only one year-end examination, held in Term 4. Subjects on modular schemes may have their examination immediately after each module.
Sec 1-3 pupils who have achieved outstanding results throughout the year may be exempted from the examination. Exemption of pupils will be based on the computation of CA marks for the first three terms and confirmed by all subject teachers (for approval by DP/ST) in Week 1 of Term 4.
Term Progress Reports
Teachers will enter the marks online on the ISP to generate term progress reports.
Form teachers and subject teachers are required to enter remarks for the pupils in their respective classes and subjects as per instructions from the relevant I/C.
Details on the schedule for submission of marks and remarks will be posted by the relevant key personnel via the electronic message board (iEMB).
Progress Reports on the performance of pupils will be issued at the end of each term to inform our pupils’ parents. Results will be released online on the ISP for students and parents in Terms 1, 2 and 3. Hardcopies of Term 2 Progress Reports are issued. Students may request for hardcopies of Term 1 & 3 reports with the Admin Office if required.
The key to achieving educational excellence is in harnessing and developing individual talents to the fullest, and in empowering the practitioners and pupils through research. While excellence is a prevailing attitude rooted in the established core values of the school, talent cultivation and research are movements in the search for new ideas and knowledge.
The courses offered under the Hwa Chong Sabbaticals are aimed at liberating the talent, passion, creativity and application-readiness of both the faculty and the pupils in the construction of new knowledge through a dynamic partnership within the school community, and with the institutions of higher education and the industry. It opens the gateway to their life-long journey of imaginations, inventions and discoveries.
Students can opt for the course of their interest via an online bidding portal. Results of the bidding will be announced through the online portal.
The courses are run by teachers, student helpers/facilitators/trainers and/or external vendors.
Some of the courses are open to students from cluster schools as well as foreign students on exchange programmes hosted by the various consortia.
