Step 1: Create a Common Application Account
It is easy to get started! Begin by watching Creating a Common App Account created to help you learn how to create your Common Application account.
You can also follow along with the steps below:
Select the "First Year Student" button.
Provide your login credentials. *Counselor Tip: Be sure to use your personal email.* This is the email the Common App and colleges will use to get in touch with you.
Complete your basic registration information. They will need information about you like your name, home address, phone number, and date of birth. *Counselor Tip: Be sure to use your full legal name.*
Select "Create Account" to complete your account set up.
Step 2: Complete the Profile & Family Sections in Common App
The Profile Section includes questions related to personal information, contact details, demographics, language, citizenship, and requesting a fee waiver. The Family Section includes questions related to your household, parents, and siblings.
Tips for completing the Profile & Family Section:
Name: This is your full, given birth name. Example: If your nickname is Matt, and your birth name is Matthew, enter Matthew
Email: You should use your personal email.
Phone: Think carefully about which phone number to give—home or mobile. It should be a number to a phone that’s readily accessible to you. You should also make sure your outgoing voicemail greeting is professional-sounding and includes your first and last name.
Permanent Address: This should be the address where you live full time or most often. Ideally, this is the same address that is on your permit or Driver’s License.
Race: Please select the most accurate response based on how you identify yourself.
Language: Remember to include English and do not exaggerate your proficiency in other languages. Use the rule of thumb that you should include it if you speak it at the conversational level.
Geography: This is the exact city and state where you were born. If you do not know, ask your parents.
Citizenship: Most of you will select “U.S. Citizen or U.S. National”. However, if your citizenship is elsewhere or you are a dual citizen, please select the appropriate type.
Fee Waiver Requested: If you feel that your financial circumstances might qualify you for an application fee waiver, you can request that here. Browse this website to view the indicators of economic need that can qualify you for a Common App fee waiver.
Step 3: Complete the Education Section in Common App
The Education Section includes questions related to current high school, former high schools, counselor, grades, current courses, honors, and intended course of study.
