This is what the weather service was showing us. They also gave us an insight showing the destructive path of Irma. This Hurricane grazed the horizon on the 9th of September, 2017.
Devastation hit the Florida Keys when Hurricane Irma made landfall. You can see roofs, and homes completely torn apart, leaving people in confusion and devastation.
This is an overview of one of the islands in the Florida Keys. You can see what Irma left behind of this once beautiful island.
To the right is a validation graph showing how much work has been done in the Florida Keys. The work is done by mapping houses, roads, rivers, and so on. As you can see on the graph, a lot of work has been done to map, but nothing has been validated.
Houses were destroyed, along with people's lives. Our HOT Team went through and mapped everything that we could that Hurricane Irma destroyed.
This is the gridded off island of St. Thomas. FEMA used the data from OSM to grid the island for first responders to use.
The devastation that Hurricane Irma has caused cannot be described in words. This is just one of the before and after pictures of what Hurricane Irma caused to St. Thomas.
Within a day, the storm has rendered the structures on the islands so unrecognizable, satellites could see the damage from space.
Neevel, The pastor of St. Thomas Reformed Church, said that when the storm had passed and he walked out to find minimal damage, he took it as a sign which said, "Maybe it's time to give, instead of receive."
St. John is the one of the smallest and most remote islands. The water and wind from Hurricane Irma reduced the hotels to rubble. A landslide blocks off one of the roads that connects it from east to west, leaving just enough room for cars. Unfortunately, there is not enough room for ambulances.
This is a small picture of the island of St. John mapped by OSM mappers. We mapped the buildings, roads, and some dressing as well.
This is a validated picture of the island of St. Croix. We, along with other mappers worldwide, mapped the entire island using OSM Tasking Manager.
U.S. Virgin Islands Updates After The Hurricane : Many people in the United States donated hurricane supplies to St. Thomas, St. Croix, and St. John. Many individuals on the Islands feel forgotten, because media accounts of the record-breaking storm were focused mainly on Florida.
