As there are more hurricanes per year more and more people are in trouble and endangered. First responders are in danger too, as they are trying to find all these victims who need help. Once a hurricane hits, thousands of victims call these first responders who have trouble finding these folks. Also in order to find these victims they need a source of where they are at and usually that involves money. Since they don't have time pulling out their debit cards and paying we have been mapping as a class in OSM(Open Street Map) in the Georgia barrier islands to help these victims and first responders. Our teacher went out to Ground Truth and looked at roads, buildings, homes, businesses, and one of her main focuses was beach erosions. She did all of this before we even started school, she planned this out and did some research and work on the barrier islands so she knows what to expect.
OSM or Open Street Maps is a website where you can edit things such as houses, roads, buildings, grassland, beaches and almost everything you can think of from a birds eye view. This is a free website and anyone can use this if you create a account. We as a class have been mapping houses, and roads mainly in the barrier islands for the past few months on and off at the computer lab. We and some other classes have spent hours on this website just mapping housing for the endangered people. There are four regions we have been working on and Mrs. Keith has assigned a few people to the bigger regions. Those four regions are Brunswick,Port Royal, Sapelo Island, and Daufuskie. If you would like to take part in mapping on open street map a link will be provided below.
