ELC is open as usual. We are aware that many families may be choosing to keep their children home as per recent Government advice. For all booking enquiries please contact our Director of ELC, Rosie Ferguson - rferguson@hccs.sa.edu.au
Our ELC team are working hard to discover new ways of connecting with our ELC families. We will continue to send out regular ideas for activities and learning via our ELC SeeSaw page. Families are encouraged to share children's learning with us using the Storypark platform.
A suggested daily routine while your child is learning at home
7.00 - 8:30 am
Wake up as normal and follow your usual routine, getting washed, dressed and breakfast as if going to school. Support children to become independent, to help dress their siblings, set the table, pour drinks, spread butter on toast and to clear away. Children actually like to help and you have the time to support and teach these skills.
8:45 - 9:30 am
Go out and “walk to school”, children need physical exercise, they cannot sit still if it’s about to explode inside of them. Create an obstacle course, set up a bike track if you have the space, ask them to move in different ways, hop, skip, crawl, and roll, support them to use their energy, join in with them.
9:30 - 10:30 am
Once the children have helped tidy up outside, return inside and go to your designated “school space” and sit together to complete a puzzle, colouring picture, writing practice, cutting out from a magazine or newspaper or supermarket catalogue.
10:30 - 10:45 am
Tidy away and prepare a snack. Children need to eat little and often, it’s important to keep the ELC routine going. Help them to prepare their fruit/crackers/cheese/etc. and you get to sit and have a cuppa too.
10:45-11:30 am
Chores: everyone gets a job to do. Wiping the window sills, vacuum, empty the washing machine, take clean laundry to the correct place, sweep up leaves, water the garden, groom the dog, etc. Then it’s time for free play but remember to watch.
12:00 - 1:30 pm
Lunch time followed by a social distance walk, or free play outside.
1:30 - 2:30 pm
Learning session could be IT related, a project, baking, CBeebies has excellent games for the younger children. Please, please remember that children should have a break from the screen every 30 mins, and so do you.
2:00 - 2:30 pm
Try some stretching exercises or dancing. We often use YouTube clips from groups like KOO KOO Kangaroo. Cosmic kids is great as well. Go back to the 80s and teach your child how to do the Macarena, Agadoo, the Chicken Dance, etc. (we’d love to see the video).
Then afternoon snack and free play.
