REAL HARVEST FROM AQUAPONICS SYSTEM- DECEMBER 2024
WHAT IS AQUAPONICS?
Aquaponics is growing crops in water, and using fish waste as fertilizer, while growing/ reproducing those fish for food as well.
Did you know that 80% of California's water goes to agriculture?
As a drought-prone state, that's an outstanding statistic that many citizens are unaware of.
WHAT DO WE DO?
While that statistic may seem alarming, a large amount of water can be preserved through sustainable agriculture techniques, such as aquaponics. Recirculating aquaponics systems can save up to 90% more water as opposed to traditional soil-based agriculture. By practicing aquaponics, we are innovating new ways to provide food for our growing population, while saving water (and space!).
What we do in the Innovation Lab is try a wide variety of different crops, and growing methods, with our Bluegill fueling our crops. Our most commonly favorited crops by staff and students has been our blue-leaf kale, butter lettuce, and green onions.
If you're apart of Edison High School; staff, student, or parent, feel free to Request Produce or contact agriffith@hbuhsd.edu to schedule a pick-up order of our produce. Please keep in mind we do not always have produce, and if the form is unavailable to request produce, it means we are currently not selling any. In the future, we are looking to open business to the public, so stay tuned!
