Hazel Park School District's Return to Learn Plan is aligned to the MI Safe Start phases in the State of Michigan. In each phase, the teaching and learning and safety protocols will reflect the state guidance outlined in the MI Safe Schools roadmap for teaching and learning in Phases 1-5. When the state returns to Phase 6, all schools will be open for in-person instruction with the removal of the additional safety protocols.
If our region reverts back to Phases 1 - 3, as required in Governor Whitmer's MI Safe Schools roadmap, in-person instruction is not allowed and all students and teachers will work remotely.
In Phase 4 and 5, when possible, in-person instruction is permitted with required safety protocols in place. School districts have the ability to make local decisions.
Dear Families of Hazel Parks Schools,
As the September 1st starting date of the school year approaches, we are writing to share that the Board of Education voted to start the school year remotely. We understand the difficulties that this late decision may cause for many of you. These decisions have not been easy, nor have they been made without much deliberation between the staff, administration and the Board of Education. Hazel Park School District will continue to monitor virus data and public health in our community. At key points in September and October, this decision will be re-evaluated. If the Board of Education and administration determines it is safe, the district will transition to in-person learning.
As we share this information please remember that Hazel Park Schools stands with your family as we look to provide a safe environment and quality education during this health crisis. Our dedicated staff at Hazel Park Schools will continue to provide your students with an exceptional educational opportunity. As we navigate through these difficult times, we encourage you to reach out to us with any questions or concerns you may have. Hazel Park Schools will continue to work with all stakeholders to determine the best way to support our community. Please see below for more information regarding the upcoming 2020-2021 school year.

2020-2021 Return to Learn Options
When the 2020-21 school year resumes, September 1, Hazel Park School District parents will have two learning options to consider for their student.
If interested in enrolling your child in Viking Virtual Academy, contact Cheryl Hayes at cheryl.hayes@hazelparkschools.org
Option 1: In-Person/Temporary Remote Learning
The Board has elected to begin this phase as remote. The remote learning will be similar to this past spring but with increased direct and synchronous learning opportunities with your child’s teacher(s).
Students in Grades K - 5 and in center programs may return after four weeks (October 1st), depending on the safety of the students given the virus spread in the community.
Students in grades 9 - 12 may return to school after six weeks.
Students in grades 6 - 8 may return after ten weeks at the end of the first marking period. During the next several weeks, the school district may also have small groups of students come into the schools for support during the week.
Option 2: Viking Virtual 100% Online
Viking Virtual Academy (VVA) is a 100% online schooling option that offers full-time online instruction. Hazel Park teachers will be supporting this learning option
Students in grades K - 8 will use the K12 curriculum product which provides a blend of online and offline learning experiences.
Students in grades 9-12 will experience a fully online program.
This option was designed to provides an alternative learning pathway for our students and families, offer a learning experience that blends flexibility with structure, and provides a sense of safety and security for families.
Important Note: Parents who select this learning option are not expecting to have their child return to face to face learning.
