Viking Virtual Academy (VVA) is a 100% online schooling option that offers full-time online instruction. This option was designed to provides an alternative learning pathway for our students and families, offer a learning experience that blends flexibility with structure, and provides a sense of safety and security for families.

Viking Virtual students can utilize a a personal device or have access to a device provided by the district. Families interested in using a district device should complete Device and Internet Form.
Students will use the K12 course content which combines a blend of online and offline learning experiences that includes interactive lessons, videos, audio recordings, textbooks, and hands-on materials (K-5).
Students and families will be supported by a Hazel Park School District teacher. Hazel Park teachers will be supporting this learning option through a joint learning partnership between the student, family and the teacher. Parents/guardians will be the main learning coaches.
Grades K - 5 course content includes workbooks and materials for hands-on exploration and authentic learning experiences.
Grade 6-8 have access to digital materials. Course content is aligned to Michigan Academic Standards.
Course content includes ELA, Math, Science, Social Studies, and special subject courses/electives (Art, PE, Music).
Daily learning is a blend of grade-appropriate online and offline lessons that combine structure with built-in flexibility.
Teachers will periodically connect with students and families through an embedded video-based tool as well as other modes of communication.
The course content can be customized by the mentor teacher to meet the needs of the student.
Provides an opportunity for 9th-12th grade students from any county in Michigan to enroll, learn and earn a Hazel Park High School diploma from home.

Certified lead teacher(s) to help students progress through courses.
Complete online and offline lesson requirements on a daily basis
Attend and participate appropriately in required Class Connect sessions
Submits work samples on time. Student may be asked to periodically submit works samples.Teachers will communicated how students will submit work.
Participates in ALL state and district assessments
Reads and responds to email and/or messages from the teacher (grades 6-8)
Communicate with the teacher regarding questions or concerns (Grades 6-8) phone, email, in platform messaging, Class Connect
Be committed to completing six (6) course(s) each semester
Schedule time each day to work on course(s)
Follow all other expectations as specified by HP district, HPHS, the mentor teacher, and online teacher(s)
Agree and adhere to the “Distance Learning Contract”
Participate in a minimum of 1-2 weekly two-way communications with the assigned mentor teacher
It is important that students are engaged with the instructor
Parents/guardians are the primary learning coach for their child. You will support progress through the daily online and offline lessons.
Parent/Guardian Commitment:
A parent/guardian is expected to monitor and support the student in their studies by doing the following:
Agrees to be accessible to mentor teacher to discuss student progress
Parents are expected to set up and maintain a daily work schedule for the student(s)
Promote good attendance, work completion and time management of their student(s)
Support the expectations of the Distance Learning Contract and Code of Conduct
Ensure that the student is communicating appropriately and timely with online teacher(s)
Establishing a daily routine for signing on and completing online and offline assignments and activities is an essential component of a successful online experience in grades K-5.
Students and families will have the flexibility to develop an in-home daily schedule. However, the teacher will be scheduling Class Connect, video-based sessions that will require the coordination of schedule between home and school.
Teachers will be in contact with students and family’s to provide guidance on the daily learning routine and schedule Class Connect sessions. The following schedule shows a suggested daily routine: Sample Daily Schedule
It is expected that the student will spend, on average, 5 hours per class, per week, on coursework. Therefore, students would complete a minimum of 30 hours of schoolwork per week.
Students should also plan on weekly two-way communication with the assigned mentor. This is a mandatory component of the Viking Virtual Academy program.
