Children go through phases of reading development from preschool through third grade. We start with learning our letters/sounds/sight words by the exploration of books and then move to independent reading. In first grade, children begin to read simple stories and can write about a topic that is meaningful to them. Below are a few websites that you can use with your first grade student.
Between the Lions is a free resource to start early reading skills with your child. Check out this great resource.
Starfall - This website is created for students in grades PK-3. However, for a student that is struggling with some reading skills, this is a wonderful resource to use to fill in gap areas or to use for review. I encourage any student needing help with reading or math skills to check out this site. Enjoy!
Vooks is a great resource for reading. Check it out for a free trial today.
Reading Eggs - This website makes learning to read interesting and engaging for kids (ages 2-13) with great online reading games and activities. Children love the games, songs, golden eggs and other rewards which, along with feeling proud of their reading, really motivate kids to keep exploring and learning. Another component of Reading Eggs is Mathseeds. Mathseeds teaches kids aged 3-9 the core math and problem solving skills needed to be successful in school. The lessons are fun, highly interactive, and rewarding. This site requires a paid subscription, but a free trial is offered.
