What lab(s) or faculty member(s) are you working with?

Dr. Przemyslaw Dera (UH), Dr. Godwin Severa (UH), Dr. Peter Pauzauskie (UW)

How or why did you become part of this research opportunity?

I became a part of this research opportunity by looking for internships that offered hands on experience in labs. I also expressed interest in broadening my horizons outside the field of biology and grow my skill set.

What is the focus of the research you're doing?

I am tasked with building crystalline structures of the compounds that we study in the lab. I also am tasked with preparing the crystal so that it can be analyzed by the laser machine we use to characterize the crystalline material.

When thinking about the work you're doing or will be doing, what are you most excited about?

I'm excited to get lab experience that I can do with my university. I am also looking forward to using my skills to get better at prepping the crystal for the machine as well as becoming better at using the program that creates the structures for the crystals. Also, I am looking forward to becoming friends with my colleagues.

What are your future visions/goals?

My future vision is to gain a masters in biological or environmental conservation and hopefully become a NatGeo explorer.

What would you say to someone who's interested in joining this program?

I think it is a great program and you should definitely join! It is a lot of work but the skills you gain from it are worth it and also its a great experience.
