MRE-C Events

MRE-C Student Pizza Socials

MRE-C students come together each month, to give research updates. Students have the chance to connect and, share ideas and experiences over pizza and refreshments.

UH Students Participate at PREM Symposium

San Francisco, CA

April 11th-12th, 2023

UH PREM Students go to the 2024 MRS Spring Meeting in San Francisco, CA. There, students attended panels and presentations about materials science, and presented their own research, at a poster presentation.

University of Washington MEM-C Faculty Exchange Visit

March 22nd-24th,  2023

PREM Research Students learn and then direct activities to share concepts with K-12 students at Waipahu High School, ‘Ilima Intermediate School, Henry J. Kaiser High School, Radford High School.

University of Washington Student Visit to UH Manoa

March 22nd-24th,  2023

NanoCamp

"It gave me a good understanding of communicating science and ideas with different audiences."- Tracee Nguyen

"I engaged with the student by explaining my role in college and the lab. I also helped them set up the mini experiments/activities they were doing." - Cecilia Abella

UV Beads

"I assisted with UV beads and the students learned a more in-depth understanding how important it is using sunscreen (specific kind of sunscreen) living in Hawai’i. The UW and UH students tied in how important it is when it came to Hawai’i applications." - Jewel Johnston

Nano Scale

"The activity I assisted with was the Nano Scale module, and we hoped that the students learned the scale of how small things could get and still create a visible change." -Kendall Lorenzo

Spectroscopy

"I assisted with the Spectroscopy activity and the students learned that different sources of light emit various electromagnetic waves at different wavelengths within the electromagnetic spectrum." - Garett Costa

Rainbow Bookmarks

"I participated in the rainbow bookmark activity where students used clear nail polish to learn about how light waves are absorbed and deflected."- Cecilia Abella

Magnetic Ink

"I helped with the magnetic fluids lab where students used magnetic liquid and magnets to learn about how magnetism can work on the nanoscale." -Cecilia Abella

UH Kamehameha School Science Fair

January 27th,  2023

PREM  faculty and students participating at Kamehameha Schools science fair.

"It was interesting to learn what kind of research is exciting for each student." - Shelby Mitchell

"It was very exciting to me to see so many people already interested in research and eager to get started in high school. I also learned a lot of new things from the students in fields I was not completely familiar with, like in biology and in health sciences." - Tracee Nguyen

"I enjoyed this experience of judging high school science fair projects. I had never gone to an expo before where I was the more 'qualified' person (being a graduate student learning about high school projects), so it was a totally new experience for me. It was cool to see how in depth the projects were and how knowledgeable the students seemed to be about their project topics." - Isabella Kotsol

University of Washington Summer Program

Summer 2022

During their 9 week research and education experience at University of Washington, Shelby Mitchell and Tracee Nguyen were able to see “the big picture” or the overall connection of the work they do in the UH labs and the collaborative research being done at UW's MEM-C MRSEC.

"It was an exciting experience! We attended classes once a week to improve our scientific writing skills or to hear from a panel of scientists about a variety of subjects. These topics would range from specific fields to more of an overview on their research and experience." Tracee Nguyen

"While working in the labs with our mentors and other students from across the country, we were able to work in a bigger lab environment compared to the labs on campus in Hawai’i." - Tracee Nguyen

"I was able to learn about computational chemistry and the theoretical aspects of x-ray absorption spectroscopy which I was able to bring back to UH." - Shelby Mitchell
