What lab(s) or faculty member(s) are you working with?

Strain Control in Solids Lab: Dr. Dera (UH), under direct supervision of Dr. Junkermeier (UH)

How or why did you become part of this research opportunity?

I became part of this research opportunity through my early involvement in university labs, where I not only participated in various experiments but also took on the role of teaching lab procedures. This hands-on experience fueled my curiosity about the design and purpose of these procedures, ultimately motivating me to pursue a research career. In the summer of 2023, I was honored to be selected as a PREM intern, allowing me to contribute to material science-related research and present our findings through a poster after the program.

What is the focus of the research you're doing?

The focus of my research is the modification of metal borides through ultrasonication techniques for hydrogen storage application. My modification of metal borides, such as calcium hexaboride, with additives could potentially lead to the lowering of the hydrogenation temperatures and pressures to fuel cell relevant conditions.

When thinking about the work you're doing or will be doing, what are you most excited about?

I am most excited about immersing myself in the intricacies of authentic scientific practice and mastering the methodologies essential for conducting impactful research. This journey allows me to leverage proper scientific protocols to explore groundbreaking technologies and innovations, fostering a tangible impact on the world. Through my experiences as a student researcher, I have honed practical skills such as proficient handling of lab equipment, programming languages, hypothesis formulation, and the systematic validation of hypotheses.

What are your future visions/goals?

My future vision involves pursuing graduate studies to deepen my expertise in biological-material science. Following this, I aspire to contribute to the industry, gaining valuable experience while exploring global perspectives. Ultimately, I aim to earn a Ph.D. in a material science-related field, specifically focusing on biological materials.

What would you say to someone who's interested in joining this program?

Research is about finding answers that make sense to you but in a scientific manner. It will require dedication, commitment, and hard work. Stay interested. Answers are hard to find, but it feels gratifying when you do find answers.
