September 9
Welcome to 8th Grade Math!. Please use this website for helpful resources in class.
Each class period will be an opportunity for you to learn and practice new skills and re-enforce the skills we have already gone over.
This year will be like none ever but I am confident that we will be successful and prepared for the next step if we all stay committed to our shared goals. Whether we are learning face to face or remotely, I will provide my students with engaging and challenging math tasks, differentiated to meet the needs of each unique learner.
RESPECT....It is really the only "rule" we need. We all know what it means to be respected and to show respect to others and your physical environment. I will always demonstrate this to my students and I will always expect the same in return.
This year, we will be using Envisions Math curriculum. Some of you may have used this curriculum a little bit last year as the district was exploring different programs. I am VERY excited about all that it has to offer. The entire text is available online and much of the work that we do this year will be done through a computer. (Due to both COVID and the changing world in which we live). THIS DOES NOT MEAN THAT A PENCIL AND PAPER ARE NOT ESSENTIAL TOOLS IN MATH. You will still need a math notebook for taking daily notes and for exploring and practicing newly acquired skills. A list of supplies can be found below.
This year your "Unit Assessments" will also be done through Envisions. For diagnostic testing, we will be using i-Ready three times throughout the year, with the first baseline assessment being done in early October. This test is extremely useful in developing learning goals as well as measuring academic growth throughout the year.
Students can expect the daily format of their class to look somewhat like this:
Do-Now - Solve and Discuss ( ~5-10 minutes)
Introduction of Lesson Objective (~5 minutes)
Visual Learning ( ~10 minutes)
Examples (~10 minutes)
Independent Practice and Differentiated Learning (~40 minutes)
Reflection or Exit Ticket (~5 minutes)
In School Supply List: Each student will have a desk that is theirs. No other student will use that desk or the supplies on the desk. The PTO (big shout out!) has purchased pencil cases for each desk.
