Ran out of time to finish the video so I edited it
Using my iPad, iMotion, iMovie, and Legos, I created a stop-motion movie because I had the time and resources to do so. Throughout the process, I explored different aspects of animation and video editing, refining my ability to create smooth transitions between frames. I also discovered the patience required for stop-motion, especially when moving Lego legs repeatedly to simulate a race.
During this project, I learned how to use iMotion effectively, including adjusting the manual picture settings, changing the frames per second, and improving image quality. Understanding these features allowed me to create a smoother and more visually appealing stop-motion sequence. Additionally, I gained insight into the challenges of positioning characters and objects to maintain consistency in each frame. Though tedious, mastering these elements gave me a deeper appreciation for the complexities of animation and video editing.
The class emphasizes seven standards: Empowered Learner, Digital Citizen, Knowledge Constructor, Innovative Designer, Computational Thinker, Creative Communicator, and Global Collaborator. My project connects to the Global Collaborator standard because I created the stop-motion video and uploaded it onto my website for others to view. Sharing my work with a wider audience allowed me to engage with peers and showcase my creativity. This experience reinforced the importance of collaboration and digital communication in modern media production.
One of the biggest challenges I faced during this project was a lack of the specific Lego pieces I wanted and struggling to achieve the ideal camera angle. To solve this, I improvised by using flat Lego pieces and stacking two boxes to create an elevated platform for my iPad. This solution enabled me to capture steady and well-framed shots, ensuring a more professional-looking final product. Overcoming these obstacles taught me the value of resourcefulness and adaptability in creative projects.
Given the opportunity to redo this project, I would change the partner I chose and adjust the time allocated for completion. My partner was not engaged in the work, which left me responsible for all aspects of the project and made time management difficult. This experience highlighted the importance of teamwork and choosing collaborators who share the same level of commitment. With more time and a dedicated team, I could have refined the details and produced an even higher-quality final video.
Hastings High School’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) program offers opportunities in various fields, including Agriculture, Business Management, Computer Programming, Construction Trades, Culinary Arts, Digital Multimedia, Engineering Design, Finance, Insurance, and Marketing. My project closely aligns with the Digital Multimedia CTE program because it involved video production and editing. By working with animation software and video-editing tools, I gained valuable technical skills applicable to digital media careers. This experience reinforced my interest in creative digital work and its connection to multimedia industries.
Additionally, my project is relevant to careers in video editing, as I transformed individual images into a cohesive stop-motion movie using iMovie. Editing the footage required precision, attention to detail, and an understanding of video composition. Through this process, I developed essential skills in film production, such as scene transitions, timing adjustments, and refining visual elements. This hands-on experience broadened my perspective on digital storytelling and the creative possibilities within media and technology.
