Using an iPad, a Dash robot, and the Blockly app, I created multiple different codes. I made the Dash do many different things because I had the time and resources to experiment. It was fun trying out new commands and seeing how the robot would react. This project gave me a lot of freedom to be creative with coding.
During this process, I learned many things about the Dash and how to code it. I figured out how to connect the marker kit to the robot, which was something new for me. I also discovered how to move the robot manually without using codes. Overall, I gained a better understanding of how coding can control real-life devices.
The seven standards of the class are Empowered Learner, Digital Citizen, Knowledge Constructor, Innovative Designer, Computational Thinker, Creative Communicator, and Global Collaborator. My project ties to the Global Collaborator standard because I uploaded all of my work onto the internet. This allowed other people to view my progress and learn from what I created. It felt good to share my work and ideas with a wider audience.
A challenge I overcame in this project was not being able to make the star as good as I wanted to. It was frustrating at first because the lines kept coming out uneven. I solved the problem by experimenting and changing different parts of the code. After a while, I finally got the star to look the way I imagined.
Given a chance to do this project again, I would change the variety of kits for the Dash robot. Using only one kit started to get a little boring after a while. Having more accessories or different tools would have made the project more exciting. I think it would have also allowed me to try out even more creative ideas.
Hastings High School Career and Technical Education Program offers Agriculture, Business Management, Computer Programming, Construction Trades, Culinary Arts, Digital Multimedia, Engineering Design, Finance, Insurance, and Marketing. My project connects to the Computer Programming CTE program at Hastings High School. This is because I spent a lot of time writing and testing different codes for the robot. It showed me how coding can be both challenging and fun in real-life applications.
My project connects to careers such as Computer Programmer. In this project, I designed different codes for the robot to follow. I had to test them, troubleshoot mistakes, and fix problems when things didn’t work. This made me realize how important problem-solving is in computer programming careers.
