Technology has brought about a potential crisis. It seems that a lot of artwork, literature, and music by our most creative authors, musicians, and artists have fallen into the hands of pirates. Our artists can no longer support themselves nor feel safe in creating new work. Their work is being shared all over the Internet as we speak. We need to put a stop to this. What would happen if your favorite musicians stopped writing and publishing their music? Do you want to listen to the music of your grandparents? That's where this assignment comes in.
For this Thing you will find out what we can do to make sure creative work remains under proper control. You will investigate the laws of copyright and report your findings back to your teacher. You will also need to find out if there is a way to legitimately use the work done by others so that you are not accused of operating illegally. Your assignment includes spreading the word so that others know the rules. When you have made a creative work of your own you will check it for originality and you will also learn of a way to protect that work so that you will be assured you are given proper credit for a job well done.
When you have completed this Thing you will:
know about copyright and fair use [Digital Citizen]
understand the social responsibility of using copyrighted materials [Digital Citizen]
know how to recognize and avoid plagiarism [Digital Citizen]
know how to use creative commons licenses [Digital Citizen]
Have you ever taken something that didn't belong to you? Most honest people have not. Have you ever downloaded music, movies, or games without paying for them? Most honest people probably have. Did you know that when you download material from the Internet you may be infringing on someone's copyright? This Quest is for you to find out what the laws are for using materials found on the Internet. How do the laws apply to you and your activities online?
Fair Use: Fair Use (in US copyright law) is the doctrine that brief excerpts of copyright material may, under certain circumstances, be quoted verbatim for purposes such as criticism, news reporting, teaching, and research, without the need for permission from or payment to the copyright holder.
Copyright: Copyright is the legal right to be the only one to reproduce, publish, and sell a book, musical recording, etc., for a certain period of time.
Public Domain: Public Domain are materials belonging or being available to the public as a whole, and therefore not subject to copyright.
Creative Commons License: A Creative Commons license lets you dictate how others may use your work. The Creative Commons license allows you to keep your copyright but allows others to copy and distribute your work provided they give you credit and only on the conditions you specify.
follow copyright laws
create a digital artifact to demonstrate knowledge of copyright
The Internet allows us to share and access information, stay connected, locate audio, video, text, images, software, and more! With access to all this information, it is the responsibility of all to make sure you and others around you use it in a way that is legal and fair. It is time to demonstrate to your teacher that you know how to do this.
Your task is to create something new from existing work. Part of Fair Use states that you can use copyrighted materials provided you use it in a way that supports learning, use only a portion of the material, and give credit to the creator of the material. These are the rules for your creative work.
Citation: A citation is a quotation from or reference to a book, paper, or author, especially in a scholarly work.
Stanza: A stanza is a group of lines forming the basic recurring metrical unit in a poem.
use a citation making site for resources
give credit to the person who created the work
The temptation to copy and paste content from the Internet is a reality for many people. Without proper citation of the work this practice is unethical, dishonest, and illegal. One way to check your work for original content rather than plagiarism is to utilize a plagiarism checker. In this Quest you will be checking content you copy from the Internet as well as your own work for originality vs. plagiarism.
Plagiarism: Plagiarism is the practice of taking/copying someone else’s work or ideas and using that work as your own.
Plagiarism checker: A plagiarism checker is an online tool that searches the Internet to check for duplicated content/material.
Unethical: Unethical is behavior that is improper and not morally acceptable.
check my work to ensure I have not plagiarized others' content
Your goal is to stop the pirates (aarrgh). No not those pirates. You will be creating a poster discouraging others from illegally downloading and reproducing content from the Internet (pirating). Your poster should have a clear message. Remember, copying copy protected music, movies, and games is stealing and it is harmful to the creative artists, musicians, developers and others involved in the work. To create your poster you may use various media such as digital photography, drawing tools, downloaded images, as well as online sites. Check with your teacher to find out what application should be used to create your poster. Some online sites include: Smore.com, Sumopaint.com, Fotoflexer, etc.
Piracy: Piracy is the unauthorized use or reproduction of another's work.
Creative Commons License: A Creative Commons license lets you dictate how others may use your work. The Creative Commons license allows you to keep your copyright but allows others to copy and distribute your work provided they give you credit and only on the conditions you specify.
Attribution: Attribution is giving credit to the person who create the work.

1. Sketch out your poster idea offline so that you will know what you want the finished product to look like. Be sure to include some text that conveys your message.
2. To ensure your poster has a clear message:
Describe the meaning of pirating
Describe who suffers because of pirating
Describe ways to double check your work for possible piracy
