Laser Engraving

Reflection Questions:

• Using a Glowforge laser, I engraved my name into my Apple Watch band. I did this because I thought it would be a cool way to personalize my watch. It also helps me easily tell which watch is mine since I often confuse it with my family’s.

• During this process, I learned how to make an SVG file. I also learned how to properly align the design with the laser. This helped me understand how digital designs are transferred onto physical objects.

• The 7 standards of the class are Empowered Learner, Digital Citizen, Knowledge Constructor, Innovative Designer, Computational Thinker, Creative Communicator, and Global Collaborator. My project connects to the Global Collaborator standard. This is because I created my design and then published it on my website to share with others.

• A challenge I faced during this project was making sure the watch did not move or blow away. This was important to keep the engraving precise. I solved this problem by duct-taping the watch to the machine bed.

• If I had the chance to do this project again, I would not change anything. I feel this way because the project turned out exactly as I had hoped. Overall, I am very satisfied with the final result.

• Hastings High School’s Career and Technical Education Program offers many pathways, including Agriculture, Business Management, Computer Programming, Construction Trades, Culinary Arts, Digital Multimedia, Engineering Design, Finance, Insurance, and Marketing. My project connects most closely to the Engineering Design pathway. This is because it involves designing and creating a physical product using technology.

• My project relates to careers in the engineering and design field. I created a design and then used a laser engraver to bring it to life. This process is similar to the work professionals do when developing and producing custom products.
