Safe Zone Training
Safe Zone Curriculum
Safe Zone is a curriculum that is designed to introduce concepts, terminology, and resources related to sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression. There are several different lengths, formats, topics, and designs for Safe Zone trainings and programs, but the goal is the same. By participating and engaging in Safe Zone, trainees will develop:
A deeper awareness of personal ideas, stereotypes, and assumptions related to gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer, and asexual (LGBTQ+) individuals.
An increased comfort level in addressing concepts and language regarding LGBTQ+ communities with the campus community and with individuals.
An increased awareness of services on campus that support LGBTQ+ and allied individuals.
A network of community and campus staff, faculty, and students to support people of all sexual orientations, gender identities, and gender expressions on campus.
Tiered Programming
We believe in meeting people where they are and making sure we don't exclude anyone from a conversation. The tiered program allows us to start at a foundational level and encourages attendees to continue the conversations at other programs at their desired tier level.
Tier 1: Inspire
Learn basic terminology, the importance of language, myths, dos and don’ts, etc.
Tier 2: Discover*
Learn more and engage in discussions about allyship, intersectionality, privilege, power, etc.
Tier 3: Transform*
Training student and campus leaders to become facilitators of Safe Zone activities and programs
*tailored to audience and campus partners (e.g., faculty members, education majors, fraternity and sorority life, resident assistant staff members, etc.)
