Navigating Academics

There are many aspects of your academic life that you are expected to keep track of. There are people and offices on campus to help with things like academic planning and registration, getting your textbooks, and succeeding in your courses.

Academic Planning & Registration

When it comes to figuring out your classes and planning for your major, it is important to be prepared and use all the tools available to you. In addition to consulting with your academic advisor, you can utilize tools to find the right courses, instructors, and schedules that are right for you each semester.

Academic Advising

Our faculty and staff are renowned for their commitment to student development — both in and out of the classroom. As a first-year student, you’ll be assigned a faculty mentor who’ll guide you through the college experience.

This includes things like:

Hastings students work incredibly hard to achieve their goals, and their mentors are there to support them every step of the way. Because of our small class sizes, students get to work closely with our engaged, knowledgeable faculty from their first day on campus. Most importantly, our faculty and students build relationships that help students find their paths and realize their potential.

Academic counseling at Hastings College comes in many forms. Your advisor, especially during your first year, is an excellent resource. Your advisor is there to offer support and encouragement — plus help you map out classes to take and areas to explore. Our Career Services office and your advisor also offer career mapping and other resources if you are uncertain of your major or focus.

Navigating Your Course Schedule

Curriculum

At Hastings students choose a major, a minor (or second major) and an IDEA minor. An IDEA — an Interdisciplinary Emphasis Area — is a collection of courses crafted by faculty that allow students to hone in on an interest area or something they’re passionate about. The major gives students the expertise and depth they need, while the minor and IDEA gives additional breadth and understanding for a successful career and life. Successful graduates are mentally flexible, excellent communicators, creative thinkers and able to solve problems — and the Hastings curriculum is designed to help students excel in all these areas.

Academic Calendar

The academic schedule divides the traditional 16-week semester into a single two-week block and two seven-week blocks. During the two-week block, students take a single course, and during a seven-week block, students take one or two courses. Students will still take 12-18 credits per semester, just in this new format. Students meet with professors every day, and teachers and students will have more time to learn and grow together in more intensive ways. Professors will only teach one or two classes at a time, meaning they’ll work with just 30-50 students at one time.

Study Abroad Experience

The travel initiative allows every student the opportunity to study abroad or study away—and thanks to donors, to do so at no additional cost. The EXPL travel courses occur during the two-week blocks during their third year on campus.

Undecided on Your Major?

Getting Textbooks & Course Materials

For every course, you likely have some required textbooks and/or course materials. Hastings College provides every student on campus with an iPad Pro and compatible Apple Pencil. The initiative gives every student access to the same tools, which allows them create and collaborate. It also allows faculty to prepare classes and lessons knowing students will have the technology they need to complete them. New incoming students and all returners will have the option to purchase their iPads and Pencils for a discounted price upon graduation. Buyout prices will be shared as students get close to graduation.

To help families have a better understanding of what college will cost, Hastings College includes all required textbooks as part of regular tuition. Some books will be digital and delivered directly to each student’s iPad Pro, and others will be print and available to pick up in the bookstore located in the Perkins Library. This initiatives saves students and families about $1,000 per year.

Where can I find my virtual textbooks?

On your iPad, Hastings College has automatically installed your Self Service App. When inside the app, you'll be able to find your Bookshelf and a set of productivity and educational apps (including Notability, a note-taking app) . Your Bookshelf will have all of your digital books required for your enrolled courses. With Book Shelf, you can download books to your iOS device for offline reading, customize highlighters, add notes, create flashcards, listen to your books, and more!

Take Advantage of Professors' Office Hours

Office hours are regularly scheduled times each week where students can meet with their professor or teaching assistant to ask questions to better understand the material and build relationships with professors.

Office hours are an opportunity to show your professor how hard you work in their class while also getting focused help on where you are struggling. If you make a few of these visits in the beginning of the semester, it’s easier to talk to your professor when there’s a problem or you need help.

Also, the relationship you may make with your professors can also open the door to internship opportunities and pay off in grad school recommendations and job references!

If your professor's office hours are during another class or commitment, you can reach out to your professor to ask if there is a time when you can schedule an appointment for office hours.
