Jing is a free screen capture software by TechSmith. The software takes a picture or video of the user's computer screen and uploads it to the Web, computer, or clipboard. If uploaded to the web, a URL will automatically be created so it can be shared with others. Jing is compatible with Macintosh and Microsoft Windows. You can open up Jing as needed or let it run discreetly in the background while working. To access it, hover your mouse over the “sunshine” in the top right corner of your computer's desktop.
Getting Started with Jing
With the “capture” icon (the cross-hairs), you can choose which portion of your screen you want to highlight in your screen capture or screen shot. Once you select the portion of your screen that you want to capture, choose “Capture an Image” or “Capture a Video.” Video’s are limited to five minutes with the free version. You have the opportunity to preview your capture before uploading to Screencast.com, saving to your computer, or copy and pasting.
Using Jing in the Classroom
You can use screenshot features to create quick How-To tutorials to help students, teachers, or parents. Teachers can flip instruction by using the screencasting capability. For example, if your students especially struggle with balancing chemical equations, you can post a quick “how-to” video for them to reference as they do their homework.
Students can use Jing to demonstrate understanding by showing how they worked through a problem. The fact that Jing is free means that you do not need to invest in pricey tools to experiment with your curriculum.
