the oratorical scholarship program

The Oratorical Scholarship Program in Texas will begin in October 2019 when high school students will enter competition to qualify for the National Oratorical Program, with an ultimate award of $188,000 in scholarships. Posts and schools may hold local contests during the fall of 2019 if they so desire. Whenever possible, it is recommended that the Oratorical Program be presented before the student body of a high school. It is strongly recommended that the National Rules be strictly followed in all contests.

SELECTION OF CONTESTANTS AND DATES:

1. Each public high school, private school, charter school, and home schooled, with grades 9 thru 12 that is sponsored by their local American Legion Post, is allowed to advance 1 contestant to the district level. Local contests must begin after October 26, 2019, and must be completed by December 20, 2019. Contests should be conducted using National rules. Winners are to be certified by the local American Legion Oratorical Chair or Post Commander, who will then notify the District Oratorical Chair, and Department of the local winner.

2. District Contests shall be held on or after December 21, 2019, but not later than January 17, 2020 at such place as may be directed by the District Chair, and the winner certified to the Division Oratorical Chair by the District Oratorical chair or District Commander. Contests should be conducted using National rules.

3. Division Contests shall be held on or after January 18, 2020, but not later than February 9, 2020, at such place as may be directed by the Division Chair, and the winner certified by each Division Oratorical Chair or Division Commander to Department Headquarters, P.O. Box 140527, Austin TX 78714 or by email to michaels@txlegion.org. Should the winner decline to participate in the Department Finals for any reason, the first runner-up should then be certified as the participant by the Division Chairman. Contests should be conducted using National rules.

4. The American Legion, Department of Texas, Oratorical Program Finals, will be held Monday, February 17, 2020 (February 24 ALTERNATE) at 9:00 A.M. at the Frisco ISD Administration Building, 5515 Ohio St, Frisco, TX. The state contest will be conducted using National rules. Department Headquarters will certify the winner to the National Americanism Commission.

The Boomer Esiason Foundation's General academic scholarship

The Boomer Esiason Foundation’s General Academic Scholarships assist people living with cystic fibrosis and those students who are the children of parents with cystic fibrosis (living or deceased) who are pursuing undergraduate and graduate degrees. Grants are awarded quarterly on the basis of demonstrated need and academic accomplishment. They are made directly to the academic institution to assist in covering the cost of tuition and fees. This scholarship is for one year only.

Requirements:

The BEF Scholarship Program committee considers the applicant’s scholastic ability, character, leadership potential, service to the community and need for financial assistance. Once candidates have been selected as semi-finalists, they will be granted a phone interview with a committee member.

Rules and Formatting Guidelines

  • Contest is open to all high school students in the United States, US territories, and U S military bases.

  • Your essay must be 1,000 words or less. Only one essay per student may be submitted.

  • All essays should:

    • be double-spaced

    • have one-inch margins

    • include page numbers

    • include an essay title

    • be typed in 12 point font

    • be in Microsoft Word or a compatible format

  • Submissions must be submitted via the website by December 27, 2020, 5:00 p.m. (CST).

  • Museum will accept the first 500 properly formatted entries only. The website will indicate when 500 essays have been submitted.

The andrew flusche scholarship contest

The Andrew Flusche Scholarship Contest requires students to raise awareness about different legal issues. Applicants must create a public service advertisement video (PSA) about avoiding distracted driving (e.g. cell phones, passengers, radio, etc).

Two winners will be chosen each year, 1 per semester, and each winner will receive $500 to put towards higher education. View some of our past winners and entries.

ELIGIBILITY:

The following people are eligible for the scholarship:

  • High school seniors who have been accepted into a college, university, or trade school.

  • Students who are currently enrolled in a college, university, or trade school.

  • People are accepted into a graduate school.

You must be a citizen or lawful resident of the United States in order to apply.

GUIDELINES:

We want to see how creative and convincing you can be with your video. Make sure it is geared towards your peers. Videos can be technical, narrative, documentary, fiction or any other video style you can think of. Video selfies will not be considered. Be creative! We’ve seen tons of stats and percentages and they get boring. The video must be yours. Music videos taken from YouTube will not be considered.

VIDEOS WILL BE JUDGED ON:

Your PSA will be judged on the level of creativity and persuasiveness, as well as how informative it is.

APPLICATION PROCESS:

  • Create your video and make sure it is no longer than 3 minutes.

  • Upload your video to YouTube titled Avoiding Distracted Driving.

  • In the description of the video please include a link to this page.

  • Once your video has been uploaded, fill out the Application Form at the bottom of this page.

Odenza Marketing Group Volunteer Award

The main goal of the Odenza Marketing Group Volunteer Award is to encourage students to make a positive contribution to their individual communities, while providing scholarship awards to those who have done so over the previous 12 months.

ELIGIBILITY

A) Be between the ages of 16 and 22 on December 30th, 2019

B) A student must also possess a GPA of 2.5 or higher in his/her last academic year.

C) A student must have contributed at least 50 hours of volunteer (non-paid) service within his/her community over the last 12 months. Please ensure that you have completed this amount of hours and that a person within the organization(s) is willing to confirm that you have volunteered this amount of time. (Note that we will only contact the organization(s) in the event that you are chosen as the scholarship award winner.)

D) A student must be a resident of Canada or the United States and must attend a school in Canada or the United States.


561 build scholarship

561 BUILD offers one annual Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) scholarship for $1000. The scholarship deadline is December 31. Decisions will be made and the winning applicant will be notified by January 31. The following requirements should be met by applicants:

  • Be accepted or enrolled in an accredited American University degree program or Technical school that results in a Certificate, Bachelor's of Science, or Master's of Science degree being obtained or a High School student accepted into the same.

  • Non-science degree majors will be considered if related to STEM, such as a health care administrator or business major with a minor in accounting.

  • Write a short essay a page or two long telling us about yourself, your degree major, personal and professional aspirations, and any other pertinent information.

  • Provide full name as enrolled, Student ID number, email address, phone number, and school department address that will receive the check. Acceptance of the award check constitutes agreement to publish student's bio on our website. Bios of minors under the age of 18 will not be published.

  • Provide sealed electronic transcript sent directly from the University, College, Technical or High School (if first year University student). If your school is old-fashioned, have them scan and send the transcript. Please send the transcript in the month of December. Some schools only allow a one month window to open the electronic file and we only monitor the inbox at award time. If accepted and not enrolled, provide letter of acceptance and transcripts from prior school.

  • Provide a 3x5 head shot photo and a short bio of about 150 words for press release purposes. The bio may contain similar information as the essay in a condensed format.
