SOPPA

What is SOPPA?

SOPPA was amended in 2019 by Governor J.B. Pritzker. Prior to 2019, this law only placed student data privacy and breach notification requirements on vendors. Now, it impacts Illinois Schools, ISBE and EdTech Vendors (“operators”). It places regulations on transparency, student data use, adherence to best security practices, and breach notification.

What does that mean for you?

You can no longer sign your students up and use any website. It must be approved by the Learn Platform. You can apply for different websites to be approved.

What it doesn't mean for you?

Not all websites are off limits. You can use any site that has no log in or one that does not have a teacher input data about students. For example, websites like mutiplication.com, National Geographics, icivics.org and many more!

You may use with your students.

Is not fully approved but CAN be used with your students.

Has NOT yet been approved and CANNOT be used with your students.
