STEPS FOR REGISTERING YOUR NEW STUDENT

REQUIRED DOCUMENTS

Original or Certified copy of your student's birth certificate (NEW students only)

Parent or Legal Guardian's Photo I.D. for identification purposes

2 current Proofs of Residency documents (English)  (Español) 

Any certified-file stamped legal documents that pertain to your student (if applicable)

ACCEPTABLE RESIDENCY VERIFICATION DOCUMENTS

To be completed by a parent or guardian. A minimum of two (2) documents are required to establish residency, one (1) from each category. Both documents must state the name of the resident. 
If a utility bill is used to satisfy Category A, the same bill cannot be used to satisfy Category B. No hand-written letters will
be accepted as Legal Rental Agreements or Affidavits. Board approved forms must be used.

What If I Am Unable To Provide a Required Residency Document?

Required if a parent or guardian seeking to enroll a child needs evidence of residency when a signed lease is unavailable.  This includes an expired lease that has automatically become a month to month tenancy.  Other documents will also be required to establish residency.

Letters of Residence Affidavit 7:60-AP-2-E-2 English  Español

Required if a parent or guardian seeking to enroll a child is living with a District Resident, such as friends or relatives, and they cannot provide sufficient proof of residency in their own name.

Birth Certificates

Original Birth Certificate, Certified Copy or Birth Certificate or Visa When Applicable

A certified Birth Certificate is issued from the county office, in the county where the child was born. An official Birth Certificate will be marked with a county stamp or crimped seal.  A certificate from the hospital (including certificate with foot prints) will NOT be accepted.

Copies will not be accepted.  Our staff will make copies for school records

School Admissions and Student Transfers To and From Non-District Schools

Age

To be eligible for admission, a child must be five years old on or before September 1 of that school term. A child entering first grade must be six years of age on or before September 1 of that school term. Based upon an assessment of a child’s readiness to attend school, the District may permit him or her to attend school prior to these dates. A child will also be allowed to attend first grade based upon an assessment of his or her readiness if he or she attended a non-public preschool, continued his or her education at that school through kindergarten, was taught in kindergarten by an appropriately licensed teacher, and will be six years old on or before December 31. A child with exceptional needs who qualifies for special education services is eligible for admission at three years of age. Early entrance to kindergarten or first grade may also be available through Board policy 6:135, Accelerated Placement Program

The Harlem School District provides parents with an opportunity for their children to attend an alternate school other than their neighborhood school under certain circumstances, providing there is sufficient space in another Harlem elementary school.
