Hancock High School

Remote Learning Goal:

To ensure that all Hancock Place High School students receive high quality instruction that maximizes learning opportunities in preparation for the ultimate goal: the return to safe in-person instruction.

An outline of our plan for remote learning follows.

Curriculum Framework:

  • A minimum of 3.5 hours of instruction in 7 classes (minimum 6 in specific cases)

    • Instructional Videos

    • Classwork/Tasks

    • Formative and/or Summative Assessments

    • Daily Zoom Classroom Discussions for each class on the scheduled school day

      • Synchronous and asynchronous learning opportunities for all students daily

Instructional Delivery:

In order to ease the burden of potential overload on parents and students, technology tools will be streamlined and consistent approaches will be coordinated.

  • Canvas will be the main platform used for all HPHS classes.

  • Teachers will use additional high quality online resources and programs to enhance instruction within their content area. These online resources will be linked to Canvas for easy student access.

  • Teachers will be available during all respective class periods and WIN (What I Need) time.

  • WIN (“What I Need”) time is a flexible period of time students have in their schedule to provide extra help or enrichment opportunities for students.

General Education/Co-Taught Classroom

Teachers will collaborate to directly support instruction in the class via modifications and accommodations as listed in the IEP – outcome would be supporting students to finish the expected assignments and goal attainment. Office hours will be held daily at varied times throughout the week to support student learning.

*School Lunch Pickup: High School students must pick up their lunches between 10:30 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. at either the Elementary or Middle School Locations (requires sign up).

**WIN stands for What I Need. For students, it is time for tutoring and additional instruction. For staff, it is time to provide tutoring and additional instruction as well as time for PD and meetings.

Communication:

  • Teachers and students will use the following means of communication:

    • Canvas

    • Email

    • Zoom discussions

    • Phone calls

  • Our goal will be to maintain ongoing communication with students and parents throughout the remote learning period.

  • Teachers will be present at school from 7:50 am-3:10 pm. If you contact a teacher after these hours, they will respond to you within the hours of the next school day.

Student Expectations:

  • Students are expected to be engaged and complete assignments as if they were participating “in-school.”

  • If students need assistance, they should attend the scheduled WIN Zoom meetings, maintain focused engagement during scheduled class time, and may contact the teacher directly via approved communication platforms.

  • Students will report to each class daily via Zoom. Students that do not report to each class daily will be considered absent. Absences will follow the HPSD policies and HPHS student handbook.

  • Assignments are expected to be turned in by the due dates.

    • If a student turns in an assignment past the due date, he/she is expected to email the teacher to notify them. Missing assignments may result in a zero being entered in the gradebook.

  • Students are expected to behave appropriately in classroom discussions and Zoom meetings and abide by all HPHS guidelines.

  • Students are expected to check emails daily.

Parent Expectations:

  • Parents are expected to access Canvas to monitor their child’s progress.

  • Parents should regularly communicate with their child’s teachers.

  • Parents are responsible for ensuring that the technology and supply needs are met as listed below.

Grades:

  • HPHS grading scale will apply for remote learning.

  • Grading and due dates will be determined by the teacher and will follow the same late policy as “in-person” learning.

  • Grades will be recorded in SIS for students and parents to access frequently.

Technology Needs:

  • HPHS will provide a Chromebook to your child.

  • Complete the Registration Process through your SIS Portal so that we have information regarding your home internet capability.

  • Repairs on devices will be made daily and you can schedule your repair at 314-544-1300 (Ext.220).

School Supplies:

  • Students should have available basic school supplies such as paper, pencils, and notebooks for use during remote learning.

  • Additional supplies may be needed and would be communicated to students as needed.
