Hancock Elementary

Remote Learning Goal:

To ensure that all Hancock Place Elementary School students receive high quality instruction that maximizes learning opportunities in preparation for the ultimate goal: the return to safe in-person instruction.

An outline of our plan for remote learning follows. This will continually evolve over the next few weeks as we prepare for the beginning of the school year.

Curriculum Framework:

  • Full day engaging instruction in all grade levels

    • Instructional Videos

    • Classwork/Tasks

    • Formative and/or Summative Assessments

    • Daily Zoom Classroom Discussions for each class every school day

Instructional Delivery:

In order to ease the burden of potential overload on parents and students, technology tools will be streamlined and consistent approaches will be coordinated.

  • Canvas will be the main platform used for all HPES classes

  • Teachers may use the following tools:

    • SeeSaw

    • Google Suite (Docs, Sheets, Forms, Slides)

    • Screencastify

    • EdPuzzle

    • Zoom Meetings

    • Ready Math

    • ST Math

    • Reflex Math

    • Flipgrid

Special Education:

SSD Teachers will provide learning activities and live virtual lesson formats each week, based on curriculum area(s) in the IEP to support the progress of learning. SSD Teachers will also provide one hour of daily office hours at varied times throughout the week. An expected outcome would be supporting student's goal attainment and access to the general education curriculum. Teachers should consider time needed to introduce/reinforce new skills based on time above. A distance learning plan will be created every other week with lesson activities and proposed schedules sent to families.

Communication:

  • Teachers and students will use Canvas as their main means of communication. Students will also be expected to participate in regular class Zoom meetings according to class schedules.

  • The following are additional means of communication that will take place:

    • Email

    • Zoom discussions through Canvas

    • Phone calls

  • Our goal will be to maintain ongoing communication with students and parents throughout the remote learning period.

    • Teachers will be present at school from 8:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. If you contact a teacher after these hours, they will respond to you the next day.

Student Expectations:

  • Students are expected to attend scheduled Zoom Meetings through Canvas, engage in the lessons, and complete assignments in Canvas as if they were participating “in-school.”

  • Students will report to each class daily via Zoom. Students that do not report to each class daily will be considered absent.

  • Assignments are expected to be submitted by the due dates.

  • Students are expected to behave appropriately in classroom discussions and Zoom meetings and abide by all teacher expectations.

  • Students (Grades 3-5) are expected to check their emails daily.

Parent Expectations:

  • Parents will communicate with the school if their child(ren) will be absent from virtual instruction.

  • Parents are expected to access Canvas to monitor their child’s progress. Parents will review child(ren)’s work completion and progress daily through Canvas.

  • Parents will communicate frequently with classroom teachers.

  • Parents are responsible for ensuring that the technology and supply needs are met as listed below.

Grades:

  • HPES will use traditional grades for virtual learning. Kindergarten through 2nd grade will use Standards Based Grading, and 3rd through 5th grade will have letter grades A-F.

  • Grading and due dates will be determined by the teacher and will follow the same late policy as “in-person” learning.

  • Grades will be recorded in SIS for students and parents to access.

Student Orientation:

  • Virtual Orientation

    • Kindergarten students will have a “virtual” Open House tour of the building, classrooms, and meet their teachers through a pre-recorded video.

    • Grades 1-5 will have their orientation on the first day of school.

Technology Needs:

  • Students will be issued a district iPad (Kindergarten-1st) or Chromebook (2nd-5th). Pick-up schedules will be sent through School Messenger and advertised on our website and social media.

  • Students will need access to WiFi in the home. Phones will not be adequate for the needs of remote learning. If you need access, please contact Michelle Dirksen at (314)544-1300, ext. 410 or mdirksen@hancock.k12.mo.us

  • Repairs on devices will be made daily and you can schedule your repair at 314-544-1300 (Ext.220).
