Extended School Year (ESY)

What is Extended School Year (ESY)?

Extended School Year (ESY) is part of the IEP process and is an IEP team decision. Some students with disabilities may require special education or related services that extend outside of the normal school year. If your child meets the criteria/requires ESY services, they are provided when school is not in session, often over the summer.

ESY is not the same thing as summer school. Some students with disabilities will be eligible for summer school as part of a school-based decision.

ESY is based on each child's individual disability and needs. Not all students receiving special education services will meet the criteria for ESY. ESY services should be considered at least annually at each student's IEP meeting.
