Connecting the Chromebook to Wifi in School (It's Automatic!)
When a student uses a Chromebook within the HCS network, the device is designed to automatically log on to the network upon entering the student's assigned username and password.
Connecting the Chromebook to WiFi outside of School
The Chromebook will only function if connected to a WiFi network. Click the network icon in the lower right, then click the larger network icon. Click on your WiFi network. Enter your WiFi network password and click Connect. The Chromebook will remember these so you don’t have to enter them again.
Logging In
On the “Sign in to your Chromebook” screen, enter [bolded student username] before the @student.hampton.k12.va.us text and click Next. Enter [bolded password] on the next prompt and click Next. Click the green, red, and yellow Chrome icon to begin use.
Yes, other family members may use the Chromebook for required daily activities, but they must also adhere to the requirements in the Acceptable Use Policy (AUP). The AUP explains what is and is not allowed on Chromebooks and is available in the Student’s Rights and Responsibilities handbook as well as on the School Board’s Policy Site. Note that only HCS emails and passwords will be accepted on the Chromebook. Personal Google accounts will not work.
Students should always carry their Chromebooks with two hands. The preference is that the Chromebook be closed when carried, but can be carried while open (again, with two hands) if necessary.
By placing two fingers on the touchpad simultaneously and clicking the touchpad, the device will register a “right-click”. If you are using a device that has a touchscreen, it is similarly touching the same spot of the screen with two fingers simultaneously.
To take a screenshot on a Chromebook students hold down the “Ctrl” key and press the window switcher key. The window switcher key is in the center of the top row of keys above the number 6 and looks like a rectangle with two lines directly to its right. To take a partial screenshot they hold down the “Ctrl” key and the “Shift” key and the window switcher key, then click and drag to select the desired area.

This sometimes fixes Google glitches. If the Zoom sign in fix above does not work, this will allow a fresh start into the device and an option to create the sign in name again. Why?
To fix some Chromebook problems, you might need to reset your Chromebook hardware, also called a hard reset. Try a hard reset only after other ways to fix the problem have failed. It will restart your Chromebook hardware (like your keyboard and touchpad), and might delete some files in your Downloads folder.
