As we progress to third year BDS our focus will be on oral and maxillofacial diseases. This will enable the students to correlate the concepts of underlying oral structures and processes with oral diseases. Oral Pathology is one of the basic science subject in dentistry, concerned with the scientific study of the cause and effect of oral and perioral diseases, an understanding of which is essential for diagnosis and for the development of rationale for treatment planning and preventive program. This course consists of three main components, list of common diseases of maxillofacial region and their pathogenesis; Description the clinical features, radiographic and the histologic findings of the most common lesions. Finally, propose the possible diagnostic and prognostic aids that will greatly influence clinical decision making.
The course is enhanced by the study of the characteristics of each disease as the dental clinician would observe them in practice. Good skills in Oral Pathology and Oral Radiology form the basis of understanding any disease process, as well as the practical skills needed in the diagnosis and management of oral diseases. Subject information is delivered to students through lectures, interactive sessions, case presentations and projects throughout the year.
The study of oral pathology in the 3rd year of BDS (Bachelor of Dental Surgery) is crucial for dental students to understand the nature, causes, and consequences of oral diseases. It encompasses the examination and diagnosis of various pathological conditions affecting the oral cavity, teeth, and supporting structures. By learning oral pathology, dental students can develop essential skills in identifying lesions, understanding their etiology, and formulating appropriate treatment plans.
Furthermore, this knowledge empowers them to contribute to patient care and make informed decisions regarding oral health. Overall, oral pathology is an integral part of the BDS curriculum, equipping future dentists with the expertise needed to maintain and improve oral well-being.
