During the Preclinical years BDS students are taught similar, basic science subjects
(Anatomy, Physiology, and Biochemistry etc.). The BDS students are taught additional subjects
applicable to their professional requirements. The Science of Dental Materials being one such
subject which is introduced to the dental students during the first professional year.
It is essential that dental students have a sound understanding of the principals underlying the
selection and use of the materials they rely upon for restorative procedures. Rapid changes in
material science, however, ensure that the typical lifespan of a dental material can be as little as
three years before it is superseded by another one.
