Operative dentistry is a clinical specialty which involves the arts and science concerned with the teeth and associated structures of the oral cavity. This includes prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease along with the restoration of defective or missing dentition. The ultimate goal of operative dentistry is to restore the integrity, function, and aesthetics of teeth affected by various dental conditions.
Operative dentistry is taught as a part of the 4 year bachelors in dental surgery program over a two year period, in the clinical years, i.e., the third and fourth year. Teaching of operative dentistry is didactic as well as clinical. In operative dentistry, dental professionals employ a wide range of procedures and materials to restore teeth to their original form and function. These procedures include dental fillings, crowns, inlays, onlays, and veneers. The choice of treatment depends on the severity of the dental issue and the patient's specific needs.
